What makes the difference between people who succeed and those who fail in life is the way they persevered and walked through the pains. This is because other factors do not really matter when a person’s mind is down.

No matter the financial status, upbringing, success trail, and even experience in life, when it comes to how people persevere during hard times, everyone has a leveled playing field — and the winners will only be the ones that were able to hold on till the dark days are over.

Successful people use mental, physical, emotional, and any other healthy means to find a way through the storm and come out victorious. So, no matter the cause of the setback, the steps you will find here can keep you going.

Fight The Urge to Quit

This is the first thing you should fight. If you lose this battle, you will get depressed and fail in your endeavor. The other tips here will not work if you don’t get this one clearly.

When you are going through a tough time, the failures and losses can have such a terrible effect on you and you will start considering quitting everything entirely.

It has happened to so many founders, students, athletes. . .just name it. But the ones that fought the urge to quit were able to scale through and become the great winners you know today.

No matter what, tell yourself you will never quit. Shout it every morning if you have to, do whatever works for you and keep searching for a solution to the problem.

Here are the ways you can fight the persistent urge to quit:

Remember why you started in the first place

You started your journey for a reason, and that reason should be strong enough to stop you from quitting. Remind yourself of how much you want to succeed, and that if you quit, you are saying goodbye to your dreams.

Have motivational reminders around your room, house, or office

You can write short notes that will motivate you and hang them on your door so you can see it when you are leaving and entering your house. Let your short notes contain words like “keep going”, “never quit”, “success is close”, “I can do it”, etc.

Think of what will happen when you give up

Do you want to fail? To be seen as someone who started what they could not complete?

These are the things that will be said about you when you crack under the pressure and quit. Think of the time and energy you have already spent on your project and calculate the amount of waste that would be if you quit.

You will get scared of quitting as you think of what it will cause, but it is a good kind of fear. So no not quit!

Understand That Your Motivation Will Not Always Be at 100%

The first sign of someone going through a rough time in life is how low their motivation gets. When someone has just lost that inner fire, there is a high likelihood that something is not going right in their life or business at the moment.

At such times, people are vulnerable to a lot of wrong options and if you are not well prepared for such times, you may find yourself using a coping mechanism that will take you ten steps backwards.

So when you are feeling down, tell yourself that a lot of people are also feeling down — even when things are going well for them. People are just good at covering their struggling phases and that is okay.

If you have no motivation to continue, it is okay. Take a few moments to relax and reinvigorate your mind and give it another try as soon as you feel better.

Use The If-Then Planning Method

This method of planning has been helping a lot of people to persevere through difficult times and it can help you too. Since trying times come with confusion, the if-then planning method can help you start finding a solution to the problem.

But first of all, you need to keep your mood, emotions, and mental health in check. To use the if-then plan, start by finding a quiet place, then use a pen and paper to plan out how you will respond to the things that happen to you.

Write it this way; if X happens I will respond with Y. The X and Y in this case stand for the difficult things you will face and the proper way you will handle it respectively.

What makes this method so effective is that it is a proactive measure, so before you even start facing too many difficulties, use it to prepare yourself for what is ahead.

Learn to Forgive Yourself

There is no one that is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes and faces tough times. So when you find yourself in a bad situation because of certain actions you took, don’t beat yourself up over it.

Do the noble thing, which is to take responsibility for any damage caused and to start working towards a solution. But during the process of healing or repair, do not be too hard on yourself.

Forgive yourself for the mistakes because if you don’t, your fighting spirit will die down and you will feel like giving up. It could also lead you to regret and keep you stuck in one place for a long time.

So forgive yourself as many times as you need to, get up, and give life one more try.
